Alfredo Gutierrez, Feasibility Informatics Analyst
What does a career in informatics look like at Medpace? From hands-on projects to robust training & development, our informatics team not only provides crucial data management solutions but creates a culture of curiosity and collaboration.
November’s Monthly Role Spotlight edition features Feasibility Informatics Analyst Alfredo Gutierrez. He recalls his early career as a Medpace intern, sheds light on operating on an informatics team in clinical research, shares advice, and more.
Why did you choose Medpace to intern with?
While pursuing my M.S. in Biomedical Informatics and working at a hospital in Houston, I began looking for internship opportunities. My hospital team at the time was involved in a clinical trial, so when I found the informatics internship at Medpace, it seemed like the perfect way to incorporate my clinical trial knowledge with my informatics studies. I then applied and was called for an interview. During the interview I realized the informatics team was new and looking for candidates who would contribute to the work and help expand the team. That immediately drew me to the opportunity. In those five months as an intern, I learned more than I thought was possible. My mentor, Lindsey Taylor, was constantly innovating and I was involved in most of those meaningful projects. There was never a dull moment, and with the support of Lindsey and the team, I felt encouraged to learn and develop my skills. That support and lack of dull moments have been consistent ever since.
What led you to return to Medpace full-time after graduation?
Moving across the country for the internship was my first step in hoping to stay long-term and help build the team. I never really intended to leave after graduation, and thankfully, towards the end of the internship, it was clear that I had a place on the team after graduation.

What role does the Feasibility Informatics Analyst position play in clinical research?
Informatics analysts on our team contribute metrics and data visualizations to bring in new business and maintain current partnerships. We are routinely brought in to update experience metrics and maps that show our global footprint in a given indication. It is the job of the analyst to give data-driven insights on how well Medpace performs so our business development and clinical operations teams can speak confidently to our strengths in meetings with the client. Outside of the work we do on proposals and bid defenses, we find ways to automate processes for teams that may benefit from having more time for meaningful tasks. If we do not currently have an app to fill a business need, chances are we are already working on one.
What advice do you have for someone considering a career as a Feasibility Informatics Analyst?
We have a fantastic team of analysts that know the role and are eager to provide solutions to problems. We are the team you want to go to if you want to reinforce your technical skills and build the softer skills that are not readily taught in a classroom. Be prepared to query and program in multiple languages, participate in our daily huddles, and troubleshoot in a team setting. We are a collaborative team that are looking for analysts that will contribute to the knowledge of the entire team outside of individual tasks. If you’ve found our team, you’re already looking in the right direction! It may be challenging at times, but you will not be disappointed by joining our team.
In your own words, what are three key job responsibilities of the Feasibility Informatics Analyst role?
You can expect to help build and maintain dashboards and web applications, write programming scripts for data management and visualizations, and support proposal requests by retrieving and organizing data.
