Chloe Flemming, Medpace Core Lab (MCL) Project Coordinator

Project Coordinator (PC) is an essential role across industries and workplaces, departments and teams. At Medpace, Project Coordinators function throughout our organization, even in our laboratories. Performing vital functions like facilitating communication, monitoring timelines and deliverables, and more, our Medpace Core Labs (MCL) Project Coordinators are a key factor in establishing and managing studies that meet requirements and run efficiently.

This month, we sat down with Chloe Flemming of the MCL team to learn more about her role as an MCL Project Coordinator.

How did you know you wanted to pursue this role? What drew you to it?

When I was originally searching for a role that would fit my experience during college, I knew I wanted to focus on project management in the healthcare space. I loved that idea of being able to see the impact on people’s lives. When looking at companies, I loved how Medpace was very involved with small biotech due to being a full-service CRO. A focus on rare disease is something I was passionate about and Medpace offered that opportunity. I was also impressed with the career growth that Medpace Core Labs (MCL) offered. When I looked at the career path of people in MCL, I noticed how they had progressed within the company from Project Coordinators to Project Managers.

What is one skill you’ve developed and/or honed during your tenure and what is one new skill you’ve learned?

I was originally interested in project management because of how much I enjoyed working on process improvement. This has been a skill that I have had the opportunity to work on throughout my time at MCL as I have been encouraged to work on making the PC role more efficient and standardized. The constant growth of the lab means that there are always new challenges that need to be addressed and old workflows that need to be reviewed to ensure that they meet our standards. The other skill that I think MCL has really helped me develop is my ability to triage tasks. This is a job where you constantly have competing requests across studies. Being able to quickly understand what is being requested from sponsors and then being able to assess what is a higher priority is critical to being successful in this role.

What would you tell someone who is considering a role as an MCL Project Coordinator?

This is a great job for anyone who loves constantly learning about new technologies and modalities. The MCL is always expanding by becoming involved in studies with new imaging modalities, ECG equipment, or wearable devices. It requires being flexible on a day-to-day basis as the needs of studies are continuously changing.

Many PC roles, especially at Medpace, function outside of a lab setting. What makes an MCL PC role unique?

MCL Project Coordinators work with site coordinators who do not have expertise with imaging and with radiologists/cardiologists who specialize in specific modalities. Being successful at our job requires the ability to communicate with both groups and to translate feedback in both directions. To succeed at this communication, you must be able to quickly pick up how all different types of imaging works, then explain and assist sites with any issues regarding the imaging.

In your own words, what are three key job responsibilities?

The first main task of an MCL Project Coordinator is assisting sites with any questions they have about how imaging/ECGs need to be performed for the trial. The second is coordinating the central read of subject images once they are received by processing the images to ensure they meet the basic requirements and resolving any data discrepancies. The final responsibility is maintaining study documentation through initial drafts of meeting minutes/manuals and by ensuring that study documentation is filed correctly.
