Meet Dr. James Xidas, MD, Medical Director

What led you to Medpace?

I appreciate the wide range of expertise at Medpace, and the collaborative connections among various departments. The global presence of Medpace’s medical, regulatory, and operational leadership, along with its fully integrated Central Labs, Core Imaging, and Phase I Unit services, distinguishes it from other organizations.

What unique perspective do you bring to Medpaceโ€™s psychiatry team?

My background in clinical practice provides a thorough understanding of the patient experience with complex psychiatric conditions. This enhances my ability to manage study design, patient recruitment and retention, and safety considerations in trials.

What are the biggest unmet needs and emerging trends in psychiatry?

There are several areas of unmet needs in psychiatry. Psychotic disorders, for example, cause significant disability to patients and new therapies are needed to alleviate their suffering. New treatment mechanisms are emerging, but there is still a need for more. Substance use disorders and treatment resistant depression are other examples of conditions that cause a lot of suffering where it would be good to have more treatment options.

What are the key challenges in designing and executing psychiatric clinical trials?

Psychiatric conditions are complex and often involve various physiological, genetic, and environmental factors. This complexity can make designing trials difficult.  Study populations may not always fully encapsulate real world patient populations. Many comorbidities are excluded from trials, and clinical outcomes rely more heavily on patient subjectively which can complicate outcome measurements. Response to placebo is another challenge as it can be higher in psychiatric research, which can make it difficult to assess the true effect of a treatment.

Where do you see the greatest opportunities for innovation in psychiatric drug development?

Opportunities for innovation remain in the development of treatments that focus on new mechanisms of action for psychiatric illnesses. Current research includes promising new treatments such as psychedelics, medications for psychosis with novel mechanisms, and psychiatric applications of non-psychiatric medications, with the hope of expanding available treatment options.
